Science & Sip is an educational STEM and lifestyle science blog designed to make science engaging and accessible. While the website featured high-quality, scientifically accurate guides and experiments, it struggled to capture search engine traffic. The primary bottlenecks were unstructured content organization, search engines failing to recognize the relationships between articles, and a complete absence of structured schema markup. Our goal was to optimize their search visibility, fix their crawl paths, and establish them as a high-authority STEM publication.

The Challenges: Disorganization & Orphan Pages
During our initial technical SEO audit, we identified several critical issues holding back the site's organic growth:
- Orphaned Articles: Over 40% of their deepest, most educational guides had no internal links pointing to them, making them virtually invisible to Google crawlers.
- Flat Content Structure: Articles about wine chemistry, basic chemistry, physics, and school experiments were all lumped into a single category. There was no clear content clustering or logical category hierarchy.
- Zero Semantic Data: The site had no structured markup. Search engines had to rely entirely on basic text parsing instead of direct semantic signals.
Our Strategy: Structured Content Clusters & Link Trees
To resolve these technical debt items, we executed a three-step optimization strategy:
1. Building Semantic Content Clusters
We grouped the entire blog catalog into 4 distinct semantic subject silos (Chemistry, Physics, Adult STEM, and Kids DIY Experiments). Within each silo, we created a high-level "Pillar Page" that linked out to detailed sub-topics (cluster articles). The cluster articles then linked back to the main pillar page. This cluster structure signals clear topical authority to search engines and allows link equity to flow seamlessly throughout the site.
2. Deploying a Contextual Internal Link Tree
We programmatically scanned the blog posts for key phrases and injected contextually relevant internal links. This eliminated all orphan pages and ensured that every article was accessible within 3 clicks of the homepage. By organizing the internal link architecture, we helped Googlebot crawl the site more efficiently, saving their crawl budget.
3. Ingesting Advanced JSON-LD Schema Markup
We developed and deployed a custom JSON-LD schema suite for the site:
- BlogPosting Schema: Added to all informational articles to define the author, publisher, and publication date explicitly.
- FAQPage Schema: Implemented on experimental guide pages containing frequently asked questions, allowing Science & Sip to secure rich, eye-catching search snippets directly on the Google search results page.
- BreadcrumbList Schema: Configured to display clear hierarchical trail paths in search engine listings, increasing organic click-through rates.
The Outcome
Within 45 days of deploying the content clusters and internal link updates, Google re-indexed the optimized directories. Organic impressions climbed from 73.4K to 162K, representing a 120.7% growth in search visibility. Click volume rose to 28.9K clicks, and the site secured a stable 3.4 average keyword position for their top queries.
